Feed
Feed by M. T. Anderson was a very interesting and spooky read to me. I've read lots of other reviews of the book how they found it funny but I really found it all quite scary.
In Feed the future is controlled by massive corporations which is not all that different than other science fiction novels but with the catch that they are actually in your brain and see everything you do. Nearly everyone at a young age has a chip put in their brain that connects them to the feed which is pretty much the internet so everyone has access to instant knowledge. In school the characters don't learn about history or math only how to properly use their feed. That does not sound too bad at all but the huge negative to all of this is that the characters have constant advertisements sent directly to them impossible to block and are constantly reminded of sales or what things they should buy. Also, since the Feed companies are connected to your brain they see and hear everything you do so they are constantly building a profile for you and what things you want to buy.
If you think about it all these things are already happening to us. Facebook looks into our profile and tries to see what advertisements are best for us. Amazon sells kindles that are cheaper for the small price of having advertisements included in the device and of course cookies are constantly being stored about websites you visit. In large cities you are constantly being watched on CCTV and anymore any time the government wants your location by your cellphone all they have to do is ask.
The sad thing is just as the character admits in the book no one likes being watched or having advertisements shoved down at them we still use Facebook and will still use our cellphones even if we know we are being watched. So it is scary to think about the future and how much farther the government and all these companies will go to know everything about us.
Hello Google Sir! Goodbye!
The Catcher in the Rye
A week ago I began reading The Catcher in the Rye with KW. In my entire life I've actually never read the same book start, not once so it is a new thing for me to read a book for a second time. The first time I read The Catcher in the Rye I was in high school and thought how Holden was a pretty cool guy and how interesting his thoughts were but now I just find it so funny!
Holden has been such a jerk so far in the book acting like he is better and different from everyone else. He is always talking about how phony everyone is around him and pretty much every single character in the story he meets he can't stand. He complains about his teacher's old robe, his neighbor trying to talk to him, and his roommate using the same old razor blade. What is also so funny is how great he thinks he is wearing and talking about the red hunting cap he just got. It makes me think back to high school/college how there would always be that guy who thought it was so cool and unique to wear a fedora or some other random hat every single place they went to.
Nice hat!
But letting someone bother you because of the hat they wear is very Holden like. Maybe I have not grown up as much as I thought.
